Are Gambian Police Friends with Armed Robbers?

Is it a display of lackadaisical attitude or could it just be that the police are collaborating with the armed robbers? I’m just thinking out loud. No, I’m actually not thinking but rather baffled by the current security status of this so called “New Gambia”. It seems like new Gambia’s security lapses are way worse than the Old Gambia, at least to me. I do not want to affirm the saying that “the devil you know is better than the angel you do not know”, yet nothing seem to be countering this notion as series of unfortunate security threats keep reoccurring without any prudent action being taken by the relevant authorities. Since the police are the authority mandated to ensure internal security of a country, I am beginning to wonder if they actually are aware of their mandate, or are simply just working in tagged teams with the armed robbers and thieves who seem to be getting away with almost anything these days.

In this our “democratized” new Gambia, it is becoming very evident that democracy has indeed been granted to all including thieves, armed robbers, rapists, murderers, pickpockets, so on and so forth. Gambia has indeed decided on allowing all these categories of people to coexist without hassle. From the time this new government decided to render the Arm Forces redundant, they have been unable to ward these skanks off, like they did before. As for the police, I am still unable to identify what exactly their functions are. Perhaps giving out licenses to unqualified drivers? Congesting traffics? Unnecessarily intimidating drivers in traffic or without doubt drinking of “attaya” while on duty. As for ensuring national internal security, it seems like that’s really not their concern for now.  Because what manifestations of a porous system could be worse than the current security lapses at a strategic location such as the airport? Or the gang robbing of Banjul Pharmacy at Kariraba Avenue, or perhaps the raping of an innocent Hairdresser in her Salon in broad day light in Kololi, and many others?

The main questions therefore still remain, what are the police doing about all these? What measures has the Gambian government taken thus far to address these occurrences that are becoming repetitive and breeding insecurities in our country? If the government do not begin to set examples as soon as possible, then Gambians would be left at the mercy of these crack heads!!

  3. You are very right Aisha dats the reality, the security needs to b definitely strenghtened in the country for all to live in peace

  4. I don’t like what I have been hearing about Gambia these days.. it used to be a very peaceful country where u hardly hear of crimes flooding the news but now it’s something else. Such security challenges should be tackled head on and with dispatch before it eats too deep into the society as these gangs grow large.

  5. Good piece of a write up. Unfortunately, our security apparatus are behind the social dynamics taking place within a globalized world. The crooks are ahead of the game. This calls for attitudinal change especially that of the ordinary citizen. Gone are the days when the mere presence of the police scared off potential thieves. Population explosion and the increased pace of urbanization is not helping matters. If one cares about the security threat within the west African sub region, turn to an article published some few years back titled the ” coming anarchy” by David Kaplan. Our ruling class should realise they do not reside in glass house. We will all be consumed by these social deviants. ✌

  6. Anyway, I would not even an inch, agree to the assertion my dear lady has raised. However security is very expensive if any real democratic entities is willing to provide security to her citizens.

One would have suggest the recent security sector reform thinking is looked at and see where the priority security needs has addressed and let it be implemented without reservations.

The security sector reform has addressed all these pertinent security issues. My guys its important for the authorities to give security a priority and let’s provide the security institutions with their requirements and see how the security institutions will react to threats and stop blaming them wholly.

    1. Essa, are you saying that the security institutions are not provided with the requirements necessary to execute their mandate? Isn’t their an Act, a Job description, Constitution or any relevant document stipulating what their functions are supposed to be, especially in ensuring internal security?

      1. Aisha u need to understand something. Until we learn to know where we are and what we need and how to get our requirements then how to use them, this police situation will not function. The society itself don’t respect this police which is a very bad thing. We don’t help them execute their functions well. We belittle them and used them. In Gambia we asked for changes but we don’t want to change ourselves. Public workers are not respected and many times we want to compare ourself with the west. Until we have proper structures implemented starting by have a valid identification where in ur ID Card or Passport number will be the same number till u die, then name all the streets and number each compound, allow the media to know information and report or write about them accordingly even if they just rumors. Fight all frauds and corruption then u will see people respecting public service workers, the police will have a easy job to do because everyone can be identified easily. You will face charges for crimes committed, jail or fine for whatever u have done. Even the west are failing in terms of security so it means it’s a collective responsibility. We should all help

  7. Well to begin I guess the security lapses are caused by 1: lack of knowledge about ones function 2: lask of materials for the police 3: Greed is undermining development of our country 4: poor salaries are making police take bribes and that means they will forever be corrupt 5: in Gambia people respect soldiers and not police which is a bad thing for our society. I think The Gambia Police force needs restructuring and fight for credibility in the society and among there department. Police is very important especially for a nation where corruption thives rapists arm robbery and street hookers are controlling with privilege. Gambia is really lacking in everything it’s like a stagnant water. Nothing is moving. I remember 15 years back countries behind us are now ahead of us I mean in everything. We have a very big problem. Waa Salaam

    1. Restructuring the Police force is indeed a must and must be done as soon as possible. Our systems are not yielding any positive outputs despite the change of government. Security wise, things are getting worse and this is creating anxiety among the vulnerables

  8. One thing is to arrest a thief, another thing is to find them guilty and judge them accordingly. Our police surprisingly know all these thieves around and still allow them to do their things, I strongly believe they’re getting their shares.

  9. Since our Security is a concern… Mob justice is not too pleasing! I will advice everybody to be vigilant. lets be each other keepers. Avoid giving the thieves room to do their act. Stop going to lonely places helplessly. Keep your valuable stuffs in attack and away from eyes on busy traffic, in crowds, etc.

Sad we have to live on with this till when the security authorities realize they need to fix this.

  10. Nicely put, I couldnt agree with you more! the police need to fix this mess that is happening. even if it takes a thousand more check points let there be.

  11. Nicely put … I couldn’t agree with you more! It is a concern that we need to address and the security team needs to address this soonest.
